Not yet nine years old, Patty Reed was too weak to make the journey to safety with the first rescue party and so returned to the lake with her little brother Tommy.

One week later their father arrived at the lake and began doling out supplies to the starving emigrants.  James Reed asked Patty if she could handle the flour and other rations the rescue party brought.

With great pride, Patty baked bread for everyone.
